Sugar (glucose) plays a key role in generating bioenergy in cells.
The uptake and transport of glucose into the cells depends on the response of the cells to the hormone insulin and on optimum production of insulin in the pancreas. Glucose that enters the cells is transformed into energy in a chain of metabolic reactions that require specific cellular nutrients as catalysts. Excess glucose is stored in the form of glycogen and utilized when needed to meet our body’s energy requirements.
It is important to maintain optimal blood glucose levels and effectively utilize sugar molecules by the cells building our different organs. As an example, glucose carried in blood enters the vascular wall endothelial cells through small biological pumps in the cell membrane. Vitamin C also uses the same transport route into those cells. Therefore, too much glucose in the blood impairs intracellular vitamin C transport and causes its deficiency in the cells building the blood vessel walls. Therefore, a balanced relationship between vitamin C and glucose in the blood is important for optimum entry, transport, and utilization of both compounds by the cells.
